The Spirit of Texas Juried Art Competition

Spirit of Texas

The Witte Museum and the San Antonio Art League and Museum co-sponsored The Spirit of Texas juried art competition in honor of The Art of Texas: 250 Years. Artists nationwide were invited to submit original artwork inspired by the Lone Star State. The three winners of the competition and an additional 20 top artists are displayed here. Congratulations to the winning artists!

The Spirit of Texas was offered in the tradition of the 1927-1929 Edgar B. Davis Competitions sponsored by the San Antonio Art League and held at the Witte Museum with the coordination of curator Eleanor Onderdonk. The groundbreaking Davis Competitions focused attention on the dynamic art scene in Texas. Artists were drawn to the competitions by unprecedented cash prizes put forth by Edgar B. Davis and the opportunity for exposure and notoriety.
